In 2014 he was a recipient of a Contemporary Art Tasmania Shotgun professional development award.ĭoctor of Philosophy, Tasmanian College of the Arts, Hobart Hawley’s work is represented in public collections such as The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Artbank, The Devonport Gallery, Burnie Regional Art Gallery and The University of Tasmania. He has received numerous state and federal arts grants including an Arts Tasmania project grant (2014) and has been a finalist in many different art prizes including The Hutchins Contemporary Art Award, The City of Hobart Art Prize, Tidal The city of Devonport Art Award, The Bay of Fires Art Prize, The Bruny Art Prize, The Burnie Print Prize and The Fremantle Print Award. These include Anita Traverso Gallery, Dianne Tanzer Gallery and La Trobe Street Gallery. Since 2000 Hawley has undertaken numerous solo exhibitions at commercial galleries in Melbourne. Recent solo exhibitions include Movement, at Colville Gallery, Hobart and The Same As It Never Was (2015) at the Moonah Arts Centre.
His research re-framed abstract painting within Henri Bergson’s principles of Movement, Duration, Intuition and Becoming in order to form a new ontological perspective. David Hawley was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Art) from the Tasmanian College of the Arts, University of Tasmania, Hobart in 2018.
